* Exported from MasterCook * Use By -- Sell By Dates Information Recipe By : Serving Size : Preparation Time :0:00 Categories : Volume 15-10 Oct 2012 Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method -------- ------------ -------------------------------- (See Below) We've all grabbed things out of the fridge and wondered if they're safe to eat, after we realize the food is past its "sell by" or "use by" date. But, you may be surprised that some foods are still safe to eat many weeks after those dates say. There is a big difference between "use by" dates and "sell by" dates. "Sell by" is a reminder to the grocery store that it's time to move the product. The other is for the consumer to know the product is past its peak. American families toss more than 120 pounds of food each month and more often than not, it's because the product is past its "use by" date. It doesn't mean its spoiled, it's just not as fresh. When it comes to a food shelf life: > Eggs can last four weeks past the "use by" date, as long as they're stored in their original packaging. > Cheeses, especially hard cheese, can last months. > Cold cuts usually last one week past the "use by" date. > Frozen raw meat (whole, not ground) can last a year past the expiration date. > Frozen ground beef will only hold for about three months. > About three months is the limit to keep ice cream. Shoppers have different ways of determining if their food is bad. What may be the best way is to give it the eye and nose test and use your common sense.
